Building a More Useful Professional Network for Victoria’s Building Industry

Working in Victoria’s building industry involves constantly drawing on information, experience and other professionals.

There are regulations to interpret, technical resources to find and consultants to engage when a project moves outside your own area of expertise.

Over time, experienced practitioners tend to build their own network around those needs.

You know the engineer you can call when something unusual comes up.

You know where you saved that useful technical reference.

You have a few consultants you trust enough to recommend to a client.

You also know which industry updates are worth paying attention to and which can probably wait.

That knowledge is valuable, but it often takes years to build.

DTP Insider was created around a simple idea: could some of those useful resources, connections and industry knowledge be made easier for Victorian practitioners to access in one place?

PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS SHOULD BE PRACTICAL

There are already plenty of ways for professionals to connect with one another.

We weren’t interested in creating another broad networking platform.

The starting point for DTP Insider was the day-to-day work we see through Deemed to Perform Consulting.

People need technical information they can actually use.

They need somewhere to find a trusted consultant when a project requires expertise outside their own.

They want to understand what a service is likely to cost without going through an unnecessary quoting process.

And sometimes they need a checklist, standard detail or reference document that saves them from recreating something that already exists.

Those needs shaped the network.

USEFUL INFORMATION IS OFTEN SPREAD ACROSS TOO MANY PLACES

Anyone working in building practice will have their own collection of resources.

Some sit in bookmarked web pages.

Others are saved in project folders, inboxes or internal systems.

A useful practice note gets circulated around the office and then becomes surprisingly difficult to find six months later.

At the same time, regulations and industry guidance continue to change, so practitioners also need to keep track of new information as it becomes relevant.

DTP Insider brings Deemed to Perform’s practice notes, technical references, standard details and curated industry information into one members-only content library.

The intention isn’t to produce content simply to keep filling the library.

It is to build a practical collection that reflects the questions and issues we see through our work as a Victorian building surveying consultancy.

A TRUSTED REFERRAL IS DIFFERENT FROM A DIRECTORY LISTING

Building projects regularly involve professionals across several disciplines.

Depending on the job, that might mean engaging engineers, fire consultants, access consultants, energy assessors, designers or town planners.

Finding someone is easy enough.

Knowing whether they are someone you would be comfortable bringing into a project is a different question.

Most experienced practitioners solve this through referrals.

You ask someone whose judgement you trust:

“Who do you use?”

The DTP Insider Partner Directory has been built around that same idea.

The professionals included are people and businesses Deemed to Perform has worked with.

It is not intended to become an open directory where businesses simply pay to be listed.

That gives the referral more context and helps members find professionals who already have a connection to the type of work being undertaken.

TRANSPARENT PRICING REMOVES ANOTHER SMALL BARRIER

Engaging a consultant shouldn’t require a lengthy process simply to understand what a common service is likely to cost.

Some projects will always need to be individually scoped.

There are too many variables in professional services for every job to fit neatly into a standard price.

But where Deemed to Perform can provide a clear members-only fee for a service, we believe it makes sense to publish it.

Full DTP Insider Members therefore have access to a consultancy fee schedule showing discounted member rates for applicable Deemed to Perform services.

That means practitioners can understand the likely cost before deciding whether they want to proceed.

For project teams trying to coordinate several consultants, that little bit of transparency can make planning easier.

SOMETIMES THE MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE IS A SIMPLE ONE

Not every useful building industry resource needs to be a detailed technical article.

Sometimes you need a checklist before lodging something.

Sometimes you want a standard detail to use as a starting point.

Sometimes you need a reference document that answers a question without spending half an hour looking through several different sources.

The DTP Insider Tools Library has been created for those situations.

Members can access downloadable standard details, checklists and reference documents, with additional resources to be added as the library develops.

Our aim is for the library to grow around things practitioners genuinely use in their work.

If something doesn’t make practice easier, clearer or more efficient, there isn’t much value in adding it simply to make the library bigger.

INDUSTRY UPDATES STILL MATTER

Part of professional practice is staying current, but few practitioners have time to monitor every update that might affect Victoria’s building industry.

DTP Insider Members receive a monthly newsletter bringing together practice notes, relevant regulatory developments and other industry information.

The emphasis is on curation rather than volume.

Instead of sending members everything that has happened, the goal is to identify information that may actually be relevant to their work and provide enough context to understand why it matters.

That same approach will flow through the wider content library as it develops.

EARLY-CAREER PRACTITIONERS NEED ACCESS TOO

Professional networks are often easiest to navigate once you have already spent years in the profession.

Students and junior practitioners don’t have that same history of projects, relationships and contacts behind them.

We wanted DTP Insider to recognise that.

Associate Membership is available for people currently studying building, architecture or engineering in Victoria, as well as graduates and junior staff working under a registered practitioner.

Associates receive access to the monthly newsletter, content library and tools library.

When they become registered, their membership can be upgraded to Full Membership at no charge.

They won’t receive every Full Member benefit while they remain Associates, but they can still access the technical information and practical resources that may help them as they develop their careers.

For us, bringing the next generation of practitioners into the professional community is an important part of building a stronger network.

WHY MEMBERSHIP IS VERIFIED

DTP Insider is intended to be a professional network specifically for Victoria’s building industry.

Keeping that focus requires some level of verification.

Full Members are checked against the appropriate public register, depending on their profession or practitioner category.

Students and early-career Associates are verified through their institution or a sponsoring registered practitioner.

This isn’t about making membership unnecessarily difficult.

It is about ensuring that the network remains relevant to the people it was created for.

When members access the resources or use the Partner Directory, they know they are part of a community built around people who genuinely work or study within the Victorian building industry.

WHAT MEMBERS CAN ACCESS

DTP Insider has been built around five main areas.

The monthly newsletter provides curated regulatory updates, practice notes and industry intelligence.

The content library brings together Deemed to Perform practice notes, technical references and standard details.

The consultancy fee schedule gives Full Members access to transparent, discounted pricing for applicable DTP services.

The Partner Directory provides Full Members with vetted referrals across disciplines including engineering, fire, energy, access, design and town planning.

The Tools Library contains downloadable checklists, standard details and other reference material intended for use in everyday practice.

Membership is free to apply for, with no paid membership tier required to access the benefits applicable to your membership type.

A NETWORK SHOULD MAKE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EASIER

DTP Insider isn’t intended to replace the professional organisations, technical sources or relationships practitioners already rely on.

It is designed to complement them.

We want it to become somewhere members can go when they need a practical resource, want to understand a regulatory issue, need a trusted referral or simply want to stay across the things happening in their profession.

If it saves a practitioner time searching for information, helps them find the right consultant or gives a junior team member access to a useful technical resource, then it is serving its purpose.

Ultimately, a professional network is only valuable if the people inside it find it useful.

That is what we intend to keep building.

DTP Insider is free to apply for and is currently available to eligible Victorian building practitioners, architects, professional engineers and owner-builders, with Associate Membership available for students and early-career practitioners.

Apply to join DTP Insider and become part of a professional network built around the way Victoria’s building industry actually works.
